For decades, scientists have explored the depths of space searching for answers about the universe. But despite all modern discoveries, two mysterious cosmic forces continue to confuse even the world’s greatest researchers — Dark Matter and Dark Energy.
These invisible phenomena are believed to make up nearly 95% of the entire universe, yet nobody has ever truly seen them.
According to researchers, everything humans can physically observe — stars, planets, galaxies, oceans, animals, and even human beings — represents only a tiny fraction of existence. The remaining majority is believed to be hidden within these unknown cosmic components.
What Is Dark Matter?
Dark Matter is believed to be an invisible substance spread across the universe. Scientists cannot directly detect it using telescopes because it does not emit light or energy in ways humans can normally observe.
However, researchers noticed something unusual while studying galaxies.
Galaxies rotate at speeds that should normally tear them apart, yet they remain stable. Scientists believe an unseen gravitational force is holding them together, and Dark Matter became the leading explanation.
American astronomer Vera Rubin became one of the most famous scientists connected to Dark Matter research after her observations of galaxy rotation provided strong evidence that something invisible was influencing space.
Physicist Fritz Zwicky had earlier proposed the existence of “missing matter” in the 1930s after studying galaxy clusters.
The Strange Force Called Dark Energy
While Dark Matter appears to pull things together through gravity, Dark Energy seems to do the complete opposite.
Scientists discovered that the universe is not only expanding, but expanding faster over time. This shocking discovery led researchers to believe an unknown force is pushing galaxies apart.
In 1998, astronomers including Saul Perlmutter, Brian Schmidt, and Adam Riess helped reveal evidence for this accelerating expansion, a breakthrough that later earned them the Nobel Prize in Physics.
According to current scientific estimates:
- Dark Energy makes up about 68% of the universe
- Dark Matter accounts for roughly 27%
- Ordinary visible matter represents only around 5%

Many scientists believe humanity is still at the beginning of understanding the true nature of reality.
