As a result, the bottom of the cloud appears gray or dark from the ground. The darker the cloud, the more moisture it usually contains, increasing the likelihood of rainfall.

Before rain begins, warm and moist air rises into the atmosphere. As this air cools, water vapor condenses into droplets, causing clouds to grow larger.

Some clouds can expand into massive towering formations known as Cumulonimbus clouds. These giant clouds are responsible for heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and sometimes hail.

Approaching weather systems also affect the movement and appearance of clouds. Winds at different altitudes can push clouds together, making them appear thicker and more organized. Falling air pressure often accompanies these changes, signaling that a storm may be developing.

For centuries, farmers, sailors, and travelers relied on cloud observations to predict weather. Darkening skies, thickening clouds, and rapidly changing formations often indicated that rain was not far away.
