Ever looked at your shadow and felt that something was slightly wrong? Youn probably raise your hand, turn your head, or begin to take a step—and for a tiny fraction of a second, it seems as though your shadow has already started moving. It happens so quickly that you may immediately question yourself.
Did the shadow really move first?
There is no established scientific evidence that a normal physical shadow can independently move ahead of the person casting it. But the experience of seeing or feeling that happen raises an intriguing question about how the brain processes movement, light and time. And there is more to the story.
Your Brain May Be Ahead Of Your Movement
The human brain does not simply wait for the body to move before responding. When you decide to perform an action, your nervous system begins preparing the movement before your muscles complete it. Other traditions have stories involving shadow doubles, mysterious figures and shadows that appear to behave independently. These stories are part of cultural history and folklore.
However, folklore should not be presented as scientific evidence.
The fact that different cultures have developed stories about unusual shadows tells us something fascinating about human beings: we have long looked at the dark shape following us and wondered whether it represents something more than a simple consequence of light.
Try The Experiment Yourself
If you ever experience this, you can investigate it rather than immediately deciding what it means.
Stand in front of a plain wall with a steady light source behind or beside you. Watch your shadow directly. Slowly raise your hand several times. Then change the position of the light and repeat the experiment.
You can also record the movement with a camera and examine the footage carefully. Then try changing..

- the brightness of the room
- your viewing angle
- the speed of your movement
You may discover that an apparently mysterious movement has an ordinary explanation. Or you may discover just how difficult it can be to judge events that occur within fractions of a second.
So, Does The Shadow Really Move First?
Based on established physics, there is no evidence that an ordinary human shadow possesses an independent ability to move before the person casting it. But that does not make the experience uninteresting.
The fascinating part may actually be what happens inside the observer.
Your intention can begin before your visible movement. Your nervous system prepares your muscles before the action is completed. Your eyes receive changing information, while your brain interprets those signals and predicts what is likely to happen next.
All of these processes happen incredibly quickly. Sometimes, the result can produce an experience that feels almost impossible to explain, and maybe that is the real mystery.

The next time your shadow seems to move before you do, don't immediately assume that something supernatural is happening. Try looking at the light, look at your surroundings. Also try pay attention to your own movement and ask yourself what your brain might be doing at that exact moment.
There is nothing wrong with leaving a little room for wonder. After all, some of the most fascinating mysteries are not necessarily things that violate the laws of nature.
